From Displacement and Hardship to a Sustainable Livelihood: Haseena’s Journey Toward Economic Independence

2026-09-30

The conflict forced 31-year-old Hasina to flee from Sana’a to Marib Governorate, where a new chapter of hardship began as she found herself responsible for supporting her family of eight.

Hasina faced difficult circumstances, and meeting the daily needs of her family became her greatest concern amid the ongoing crisis and rising living costs.

“I always wished to learn a skill that would help me support my family,” Hasina recalls. “But I felt lost and did not know where to begin.”

With support from BMZ, the FFA project opened the window for Hasina to start a new professional journey by equipping her with dairy and cheese-making skills.

Over a period of 60 days, Hasina acquired the knowledge and practical skills needed to produce dairy products and cheese, improve their quality, preserve them properly, and market them effectively.

“This is a profession I truly enjoy,” she says. “What makes it even better is that it allows me to work from home and generate an income for my family.”

The support extended beyond training. Hasina also received essential equipment and a cash grant that enabled her to purchase a cow, providing a sustainable source of milk for production instead of having to buy it from local markets.

Today, Hasina produces yogurt and cheese and sells her products in the local market, while also fulfilling special orders from customers.

“This project has eased the burden of providing for my family's needs,” says Hasina, who now hopes to expand her business in the future.

Hasina is one of 160 young people who received vocational training in various fields and were provided with grants and professional toolkits that helped them launch income-generating small businesses and improve their living conditions.
